Oxygen is ubiquitous in rocks, like Hydrogen and Silicon.
It bonds with many other elements, while oxidizing.
Billions of years ago, Earth didn’t have any.
Only after billions of meteors brought some and the plants began poisoning the planet, we, and these rocks, came to be.

According to Mindat there are 7,712 known minerals containing Oxygen.
Oxygen is one of the most common elements in minerals, making up half of Earth’s crust and 21% of the atmosphere.

From Wikipedia: Oxygen was isolated by Michael Sendivogius before 1604, but it is commonly believed that the element was discovered independently by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, in Uppsala, in 1773 or earlier, and Joseph Priestley in Wiltshire, in 1774. Priority is often given for Priestley because his work was published first. Priestley, however, called oxygen “dephlogisticated air”, and did not recognize it as a chemical element. The name oxygen was coined in 1777 by Antoine Lavoisier, who first recognized oxygen as a chemical element and correctly characterized the role it plays in combustion.

For a millenia, everyone thought Philo’s Pneumatica explained Oxygen the best, and of course, not as well as we now understand it. Once Leonardo da Vinci added to our understanding, we knew we needed it. Centuries later, “dephlogisticated air” explained it a bit better. And now, centuries more, what more don’t we know?

According to wikipedia – Common uses of oxygen include production of steel, plastics and textiles, brazing, welding and cutting of steels and other metals, rocket propellant, oxygen therapy, and life support systems in aircraft, submarines, spaceflight and diving.
