Description

Variscite (Al,P,O,H; trace Cr), aka Utahlite and Variquoise, is a relatively rare mineral, found in a few hundred localities on most Continents, formed by “direct deposition from phosphate-bearing water that has reacted with aluminium-rich rocks in a near-surface environment” and “occurs as fine-grained masses in nodules, cavity fillings, and crusts” according to Wikipedia. It was described in 1837 and named for the locality of Variscia (the historical name of the Vogtland), in Germany. In addition to Germany, notable localities include Utah and Wyoming, Australia, Poland, Spain and Brazil.
