Smoky Quartz (SiO) is famous, along with Lake George, Colorado. Owing its color to irradiation and Aluminum, and having quite the lustrous, dichroic, mesmerizing appeal, it’s recently become quite the popular gemstone. For whatever reason though, it didn’t have any notable historical importance except that the Chinese used it to make sunglasses in the 12th century. You can find this somewhere near you no matter where you are, but it’s not everywhere. In Colorado, the area around Lake George is known for having some of the most incredible mineral specimens in the world and not a lot of places to rockhound – unless you do your research.
