Description

Probertite is a cool Sodium, Calcium, Boron, Oxygen and Hydrogen mineral, a sedimentary evaporate Borate. Named in honor of Frank Holman Probert, the Dean of the Mining College at UC Berkeley, who provided the first specimens from the Baker Mine in Kern County, California. Its hardness is 3½ and its specific gravity is around 2.1. Probertite has, so far, only been found in 34 locations, most of which, are in California, with a couple in Oklahoma, and some in Argentina, Canada, Chile, Germany, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Today, Borate compounds are used to manufacture a wide variety of products from glass, fiber-optic cable, and fiberglass, to soaps, ceramics, and paints, but more than 400 years ago, had the Babylonians known about this mineral, they’d have used it as a flux for making jewelry.

As there’s no Wikipedia page and no more information on Mindat, you can receive a free rock and discount if you send a message with any additional information on this mineral!
