Description

Wulfenite (Pb,Mo,O) was named in 1845 after the Austrian mineralogist Franz Xavier von Wulfen. Wulfenite occurs as a secondary mineral in oxidized hydrothermal lead deposits, often along with cerussite, anglesite, smithsonite, vanadinite, and other iron & manganese minerals. It’s found in at least a couple thousand recorded localities all over the world, usually near other lead and molybdenum ores.

Some of the best Wulfenite comes from Arizona, so much so, in fact, that it became the Official State Mineral in 2017. So, while this one may be smaller, it ranks with the rest and also comes from Arizona – specifically, the Reymert Mine in Pinal County. Crystals vary between deep red to orange to yellow in color and some may be bigger and prettier, but most aren’t!

Common impurities of Wulfenite include: Ca,V, As, Cr, W, Ti
