Description

It’s often mined for its Copper content, and as with many other minerals containing Copper, it’s beautifully blue! Aluminum minerals vary in color, so it’d be a cool representation for that as well, or Chlorine, Sulfur, Oxygen, or Hydrogen!

The hardness is 3 and its specific gravity is just a bit more at 3.1, and according to Mindat, it was “named in 1890 by Samuel Lewis Penfield in honor of Norman Spang, an iron manufacturer and mineral collector of Etna, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA. He contributed the type specimen for study. Its Type Locality is unknown… Spangolite is a secondary mineral commonly occurring with other secondary copper minerals in oxidized zones of copper-bearing ore bodies.”

The specific gravity of Connellite is 3.3, and its chemical formula is Cu₁₉(SO₄)(OH)₃₂Cl₄ · 3H₂O, but otherwise, not much is different with it than from Spangolite. Connellite was named in 1850 after Arthur Connell, a professor of chemistry at St Andrew’s University, in Edinburgh, Scotland, who first studied the mineral.” Its Type Locality is Wheal Providence, Providence Mines, Carbis Bay, St Ives, Cornwall, England, UK.
