Description
Most of the 151 named minerals with a composition including Nitrogen are a bit on the rare side, and this is no exception. Ferrierite-NH₄ is only found in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia, to the best of our knowledge thus far…
Its specific gravity is 2.154 and its hardness isn’t listed, but it’s clearly soft. Ferrierite-NH₄ is the Nitrogen-dominant mineral in the Ferrierite subgroup, which is a Zeolite group named in 1918 by Richard Percival Devereux Graham in honor of Walter Frederick Ferrier, a mineralogist, mining engineer, and geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada, who first collected the material on the north shore of Kamloops Lake, British Columbia, Canada.
As Nitrogen comprises 78% of the air we breathe, it’s not as though this mineral must be mined in order to acquire Nitrogen, and there are other minerals with Aluminum and Magnesium, so this mineral isn’t too highly sought after for economic or industrial use, per se, but it sure does make for one cool collectable, and it’s really cool to be holding a solid Nitrogen sample!
